A Better Frame of Mind

By July 1, 2013August 30th, 2022Devotional

I couldn’t believe the outpouring of text and email messages to me after some of you read my post last evening. And from what I understand, those of you who know me well may have been inundated yourselves with calls and emails to get the scoop of what is going on in my life. In particular, I wish to acknowledge the notes of Lynn, Marilyn, Bill, Mark, Dave and many others who contacted me to offer prayers or Bible verses that seemed appropriate for where I was stuck last night.

One of the things that I have discovered from a pastoral perspective is that it is sometimes difficult to get spiritually fed when you are so busy trying to feed others. When you are in seminary, it is much easier to do than when you are in the “mission field” trying to constantly speak words of encouragement and hope to others. Since most of my schoolmates are in pastoral positions or teach in seminaries and Christian colleges, I don’t have much in common with them on a day to day basis when I am separated from the constant exposure of biblical teaching found in seminary. And it’s no secret that I miss that. Sometimes I just need to chill out and go back to my roots to get grounded again. Today, I did that..

Anyway, I have spent some time in reflection and trying to get a little perspective – looking at things from the 60,000′ view rather than getting in the weeds, as I was last night. And things look much different from up here. So once again, I am back in the frame of mind that I find myself in most of the time.

The verse for this evening is one that was submitted to me this morning, from Matt. 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” They are good words – words I needed to hear and apply to myself. My encouragement tonight is to let you know that the same kind of rest I needed last evening is open to you as well. My prayer is that God’s pursuit of you will help to give you the kind of rest that can only come from an eternal relationship with Christ Himself – and that you can come back rested and more satisfied, even if it is only a short break from the daily rhythms of life. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
