A No-Labor Day…

By September 1, 2019August 30th, 2022Devotional

Like many families this week-end, our family has celebrated together with a family barbecue. We typically think of Labor Day as the end of the summer even though the calendar lets us know that it is really still three weeks or so away.

In any event, in the spirit of the day, I have decided to rest from my normal labor of writing a long post this evening. Each of us needs a break from the routine every now and then. But I would be remiss if I ended this evening without at least choosing an appropriate verse for the occasion.

So… our verse for tonight comes from the creation story in the book of Genesis. When God had worked the first six days, and everything was ready for mankind on the face of the earth, and everything had been created, Moses, the author of Genesis tells us, in Genesis 2:2-3, “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”

Notice that God blessed the seventh day – and even made it holy. So we know that God endorses rest. My encouragement this evening is that God recognizes that we need rest from our regular work from time to time. In the Old Testament, we are told that we are to toil six days and rest on the Sabbath. My prayer is that we can all enjoy a Sabbath rest tomorrow and be ready to get back to the work of the day on Tuesday. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
