Change of Address…

By January 19, 2014August 30th, 2022Devotional

This week-end we started the task of moving small items across to the new house. It’s become a little confusing. When we go to the “house” is it the new one or the old one? Which one is our “home”? And when you are in one place but have already made the mental break and are starting to embrace the new house, it feels a little funny. Partly, because you don’t have real roots in either place – at least we don’t – not yet. Our current place is torn up and full of moving boxes. The new house is in disarray and we won’t spend the night there until Thursday. We will still have stuff in the old place and yet we will base our lives in the new place. So as you can see, we are kind of in transition.

Every time we turn around, there is something else we must remember to do. Today we thought of driver’s licenses and plates. Oh yea, then we remembered that we will have to order new checks and have all the utility bills from the old house sent to the new place. The list seems to go on forever. The internet went on in our new home yesterday and Janet now has her cable in place as well. When the TV’s move, that will signal the real transition to our new house.

As I was considering all this earlier today, it occurred to me that as Christians, we struggle with some of the same issues that Janet and I are dealing with in our lives. Jesus was quick to point out that while we may be “in the world”, we are not “of the world.”  We may be used to “living” here on the earth, but our home is in heaven. That is where Jesus came from and where He returned to when He ascended back to the Father after His resurrection. So there is a difference between where we live and where our home is. That’s kind of how Janet and I feel today. We live in our current house but already are looking at our new address as a “home” to build new memories.

It’s just amazing how quickly things happen when they are just so right. And we need to remember that in our Christian walk as well. The influence of God and His Son can’t be overstated. We must remember where our help comes from and it would be foolish for us to think that earth is our final destination. It just isn’t true – we are heaven bound. We have a temporary address here on earth – but some day we will have a change of address and move back “home” with the Father and His Son.

The verse for this evening is from the apostle Peter’s first epistle. We are told, in 1Pet. 2:11, “Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.” Peter lets us know that we are aliens here. We are not to get too used to the ways of the world. We have more noble ambitions – divine ambitions – to honor God. My encouragement this evening is to remember that God has loftier goals for us than to follow the ways of the world. We are to maintain a higher standard. My prayer is that God will direct your steps and that you will remember that our eternal home is in heaven – not where we currently “live.” Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
