I Love You Dad, Oh Yes I Do!!!

By June 17, 2012August 30th, 2022Devotional

Dear faithful readers~

Surprise!  You have a guest blogger this evening!  This is Kristin, Scott’s oldest daughter.  I have been waiting for months for the perfect opportunity to hijack dad’s blog.  He does so much for everyone else I wanted to take a brief moment to share how much he means to me.  Father’s Day seemed like to perfect time for me to take over the blog.  A.  Dad deserves a break and B. Andrew knows enough about technology to get this up on the web before dad finds out!

If you have been a longtime reader then you know that 2012 has been a difficult time for our family and for me personally.  My thirteen year marriage came to an end and my children and I have begun our journey on the road to recovery and building a new life.  While this time has been tragic for us and certainly presented unique challenges, there have been numerous amounts of joy and laughter as my original nuclear family circled the wagons of support around me with dad leading the charge. Two things have gotten me through some really rough times.  First is an unyielding faith in God and His ultimate plan for me and my boys.  I trust without question that He has us in the palm of His hand.  The second is my dad.

We have always had a close relationship (see numerous previous posts where we have bonded over everything from fiber to high end foot wear).  Dad just seems to get me in a way that only a parent would understand.  He is as solid as they come and I know without question that he has been and always will be there for me.  Trusting in my dad is like breathing for me.  I can do it automatically and without question.  My dad is the strongest, most supportive, and amazing man I have ever known.  He is honest, fun, and loyal.  He taught us how to work hard, enjoy life, and even though my divorce has been horrible; watching dad love my mom well for so many years still has me believing in true love, soul mates, and happily ever after. Dad has his faults, as we all do, but I have to say that I am the person I am today because of my dad (and I’m pretty awesome).

In preparing to write this post, I was curious about the word “father” and the biblical references that it entailed.  I looked it up and the word “father” is referenced in over 1,103 verses in the bible.  In the book of Exodus, Moses goes to the top of Mount Sinai and God speaks the Ten Commandments to Moses to share with His chosen people.  Exodus 20:12 says “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” It is interesting to note that this is the first commandment with a promise attached.  In order for the Israelites to live in peace for generations in the promised land, they would need to respect authority and build strong families.  This means speaking well of them and politely to them.  It also means showing parents courtesy and respect, following their teaching, and example of putting God first. Even if one finds it difficult to get along with one’s parents they are still commanded by God to honor them.

My encouragement tonight is for you to draw strength from God’s promise to honor and value all families (including yours). I am so blessed to have the greatest parents on the planet and know an unconditional love, not only from a Heavenly father, but from my very own dad.  I love you so much dad!  Happy Father’s Day! You’re the bomb!

XOXO Kristin
