One Day Closer…

By January 20, 2014August 30th, 2022Devotional

Today, we are one day closer to the move. It’s late, I’m tired and things are progressing a little slower than I would like. Make no mistake, things are happening but I tend to be a little on the anxious side and I can’t wait for packing on Wednesday and the move on Thursday.

The whole scheme of things reminds me of one of my seminary professors. Dr. Duane King was a devout believer who taught things such as Baptist doctrine, church polity and a host of other classes that dealt with church administration and other areas of pastoral care and oversight. He had a favorite line that he used whenever he finished a letter. He would say, in the last line, “Remember, the return of the Lord is closer than when you first believed…”

I had never really thought about that before Dr. King said it. But you know what – he’s right. Each day that we live brings us one day closer to the second coming of Christ. And certainly that means that the return of Christ is closer that when we first believed. Sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Just like the fact that our move is one day closer than yesterday.

The verse for tonight highlights this idea of the return of Christ. The apostle John tells us what Jesus said in John 14:28, “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” This verse affirms that Jesus knew that he was going to heaven and then coming back and the Scripture tells us that there will be a second coming of Christ. My encouragement this evening is that every upcoming event in your life is closer than it was yesterday. My prayer is that you will live each day to the fullest and that you will anticipate the return of Christ with great expectation. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
