Seek Shelter!

I was visiting a client site and noticed a stash of safety equipment in one office. This company is very dedicated to making sure that all its employees have the latest in safety equipment when they are in the field working and they take the prevention of injury more seriously and intentionally than any other company I have ever worked with.

Around the building are diagrams of the layout and the fastest route to the exits. In case of tornadoes, there are signs pointing the way to those areas that have reinforced concrete walls and other areas near the center of the building. And then, there is the guy who is responsible for this initiative. I’ve been around quite a few people in charge of safety but I don’t know if I have ever had the pleasure of knowing someone as completely dedicated to making sure that people are safe. He eats, sleeps and breathes safety and the mitigation of potential injury. He even spends his week-ends delivering messages of safety, lecturing to groups and when necessary, he also does search and rescue missions as part of his role as a volunteer fireman.

Yesterday, for the first time, I noticed a sign in the hallway heading to the restrooms. It simply said, in red lettering, “Seek Shelter.” My mind immediately went to the idea of our heavenly Father. After all, He is the ultimate shelter for all of us who follow Him and His Son, Jesus Christ. The Scripture is full of references to God and his provision and protection of His people. And many authors throughout the pages of the Bible have shared stories of God’s goodness and loyalty to His chosen people.

Particularly in the Psalms, there are virtually countless prayers from those who seek refuge under the “wings” of God. There are many word pictures of God as One who provides safety for His flock. One of my favorite passages along these lines comes in the 61st psalm. It is a psalm of David who is remembering what it was like to be in the presence of God before he was being chased in the wilderness. During the course of the psalm, David becomes stronger and stronger as he reflects on God’s involvement in his life. He tells us, in Psalm 61:4, “I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” My encouragement this evening is that you can always seek shelter under the wings of the Father. In fact, we are encouraged to do that. My prayer is that you recognize the times in your life when God has provided a much needed place for you to rejuvenate and to dwell in His tent – safe from any possible thing that could jeopardize you and your relationship with God. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
