Senior Moments and Dog Pills…

By January 15, 2017August 30th, 2022Devotional

Recently, Janet and I have both done some random things that we have just chalked up to human error. For starters, I wrote my last post on the 50th anniversary of the death of my grandfather back in January, 1966. However, as my cousin pointed out to me, it hasn’t been 50 years since his death…. this is 2017, so it has been 51 years since he passed away. Now how I got that wrong, I don’t really know… I just kept thinking we were in 2016 and I was wrong.

Now, I tend to have that problem for several weeks at the start of each year but something like this is a mistake that I should have caught. But I didn’t. So, just in case anyone else goes and reads the last post I wrote, I went in and updated it. I feel kind of stupid that I missed the correct date, but that happens from time to time and it would be arrogant of me to think that I am above making mistakes.

Janet had a similar incident recently. But I should say at the outset that she has an excuse. Having had surgery for her arm recently, she is still shaking off the effects of anesthesia from her body, but nonetheless her incident was a little funnier than mine.

You see, each morning we have a ritual. Janet gets up and swallows a pill that she takes on an empty stomach. At the same time, she prepares Lexie’s morning snacks, including half a pill that she gets, wrapped in the requisite piece of turkey. I happened to come into the kitchen several minutes later and confirmed with Janet that she had taken her pill. The problem was that a little white pill was still on the counter top and that the other half of Lexie’s tablet was nowhere to be found.

You probably know where I am going with this. It became evident that Janet took Lexie’s pill instead of her own. Of course, this got her a little upset and concerned. After all, the label indicated that the pills were for canine use only and to contact a doctor in case of accidental ingestion. Well, after all that we had been through, it would have been tough to head to the hospital and have her stomach pumped or some other unpleasant medical procedure. Plus, we didn’t know for sure that she had taken Lexie’s pill. So, I called a doctor I am close to and found out that the tablet is similar to Sudafed and wouldn’t hurt Janet at all. Lucky us!

But this all goes to show that from time to time we do things without really thinking them through. I guess they fall under the category of accidents… Or, you could say that as we get older, we are a little more forgetful and don’t pay as close attention as we should. Such is our human frailty. We are not perfect – even in the best of circumstances.

But God is – that is the message that Moses gives us in our verse for tonight. Moses, the author of Deuteronomy tells us, in Deut. 32:4, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” That’s great news that we can rest in. My encouragement this evening is that we serve a perfect God – who understands that we fall far short of divine perfection. My prayer is that you will appreciate the fact that God sent His perfect Son, Jesus, to atone for our sins. And that means that eventually, when we enter heaven, we will live in perfect harmony for all eternity. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
