The Healing Begins

The week has passed faster than anyone could have imagined. It was one week ago this evening that Janet’s father finished his earthly life and that I made plans to head out here. Now the visit is over – the memorial services have been completed, family members have dispersed to their various homes around the country, the wheels have been set in motion for all the things that have to be sorted out and there’s nothing left to do here. So… we will drive back to Carmel tomorrow and I will be back in the office working on Friday morning.

The time with family has been great. Unfortunately, it is usually during crises or tragedies that families get together. Not surprisingly, the family has kind of closed ranks. There is very little going on with anybody other than cousins, sisters or other family members. Tomorrow will mark the re-entrance in the normal routines of life and starting to fill the void left by the death of two very important members of our family.

Things have happened so quickly that Janet and her sisters haven’t even had time to process the passing of their mother, let along also having to process the death of their father. I’m sure the next several months will be difficult for them and then we will be into the holidays and there won’t be anything easy there, either. The time in the car tomorrow will start the transition. Although we spent time in Williamsburg today, and even drove around the historic district a little, we all know that we won’t be back here as often as in the past. However, even Janet acknowledges that when she thinks of her parents, she also identifies them with this place. As you already know, Williamsburg is one of my favorite destinations so I hope to be back here many times – even though it won’t be for all of the same reasons.

So… as I said last evening, time marches on. The verse for this evening is from a book written by the Apostle Peter. We are told, in 1 Peter 5:6, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” That’s what each of us in the family is counting on this evening. God will come to the rescue, in due time, and we will eventually accept the loss of our loved ones. My encouragement this evening is to make sure that you share with God your hurts and your sorrow. Because God loves you and will also lift you up in due time. My prayer is that you have the faith to make sure that you can be vulnerable in front of the Father. Yes, He already knows what is on your heart and your mind, but it always helps when you humble yourself and confess your feelings out loud to the God of the universe. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
