The Lego King

I was watching a television program about people who think they have the best jobs in the world. There was a story about a music teacher who works with bands in Detroit, a photographer who works with Victoria Secret models and several other interesting stories, but the one that caught my attention was the story about the attorney who was consumed with using Legos to build sculptures. He was apparently a very successful person but he just didn’t enjoy his life.

He finally made the commitment to quit the legal profession and took the plunge to dedicate his effort to the study of Lego design and creation. Of course, his former co-workers really ridiculed him and for a time, it was somewhat scary to wonder about whether he could make the rent each month. But he was determined to become a Lego artist and so, after purchasing tens of thousands of the small plastic interlocking parts and mastering his craft, he was finally certified as one of only four named Lego Master Artists in the world. Since that time, seven others have also attained this rarified status but this attorney has become quite well known around the country.

He has actually created half size Lego sculptures of the lions at the entrance to a museum in New York and and is full of ideas about how to build all sorts of projects from Legos. He is to the point where he can have hundreds of thousands of Legos, in all colors, delivered right to his door and his income is on the rise. The compelling part of the entire interview was when he acknowledged his fear of being able to pay the bills but boldly made the statement that “My worst day as an artist is still far better than the best day as a lawyer.”

That statement really grabbed me. Here is somebody who is scared to death but just loves what he does. While many of us wouldn’t have taken the risk of pursuing our “love”, he did and I really respect that. In fact, his statement reminds me a a verse out of the Psalms. In the 84th Psalm, we can read about the writer who states that one day with God is better than anything else. That’s a tremendous commitment to the Lord. Our verse for the evening, Psa. 84:10, tells us, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”

Isn’t that the truth? And knowing that we have never been to heaven and spent a day in the court of the Lord, the psalmist is still committed to living life with God in heaven. Tonight I want to encourage you to face your fears. Because when they are in alignment with the will of God, there is nothing that you can’t overcome. My prayer is that you will look at fact that God’s desire is for you to follow your gifting and leave the rest to Him. Because He won’t disappoint you – it’s worth taking the risk, even if it is a little scary at first. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
