The Polar Vortex

By January 27, 2014August 30th, 2022Devotional

The last several months, climatologists have been speaking about the “polar vortex” that is descending on the midwest and has accounted for some of the really bizarre changing temperatures we have experienced this winter season. Several weeks ago, we had a real streak of extremely cold weather, then it moderated and late last week, it was really cold again, at least here in central Indiana. The week-end was a little warmer, but tonight the temperature is plummeting again and the news has been quick to point out that many schools have already decided to be closed tomorrow based on the extreme cold.

Last night, the temperature started to drop but the wind was the thing. There were reports of wind gusts of up to 60 mph combined with that cold arctic air. It was one of the oddest nights that I can remember – wind howling everywhere. Then a little warmer today right before the next blast of sub zero temps hits us tonight. In fact, it will probably be the coldest night of the season – predicted at -15F with wind chill down to -45F. That’s cold.

This unusual changing of the weather is being blamed on the polar vortex – the result of global warming and something to do with the polar ice caps. In fact, there is quite a bit of disagreement about what created this vortex. Most, but not all, climatologists believe that the cold air we are currently experiencing is air that has been swirling around the north pole and is now headed south.

Now, I am from Chicago and the weather changes there faster than anywhere I have ever been. Until this winter…. Which brings up the point of tonight’s post – our verse is from Heb. 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” While the weather may change, Jesus never does. His is the same – forever. My encouragement this evening is that we shouldn’t worry about whether Jesus will change the way He treats us or the way we can grow in our relationship with Him. My prayer is that you will trust Jesus and make sure that if you lose your way, you will return to the last place you were with Him and I guarantee, He will be there waiting for you. No tricks, no games, no shifting of the polar vortex – no, Jesus is rock solid and you can count on that. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
