Westward Ho!

By June 12, 2014August 30th, 2022Devotional

In several weeks, we will be heading out west with Debbie and Randy, Janet’s sister and brother-in-law. The four of us have done things periodically together for more than 40 years – actually closer to 45, but we have never done something like this before. Randy has always been a fan of Montana and the scenery out west, but I have never been there.

In fact, my father used to say that he hoped he would be able to see Yellowstone in his lifetime, but it never happened. I think that is one of the reasons I have never gone out there – my father was so intent on getting there and never did so I have put it on the back burner. But I understand the scenery is just beautiful and after Yellowstone, we will head to Glacier National Park, another park highlighting nature’s magnificence.

I travelled to Aspen many years ago to try my hand at fly fishing, and I think that I went through the Denver airport once, but I have never been to Wyoming or Montana. Many years ago, I was told that our family had a ranch out in Wyoming, near Cody, but I don’t think I have ever been there either. In other words, this whole experience will be something new for us. In all honesty, I am not thinking about fishing or even hiking. I am just looking forward to the companionship and taking it easy for a week – enjoying God’s creation in an area that is new to me.

I stopped past AAA to order the Trip-Tik today and I have picked up all the sightseeing books and area maps. It’s time to get excited at the prospect of what lies ahead. The verse for this evening reinforces the things that God has created. We are told, in Gen. 1:11-12, “Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.”

Notice that God created all these things and saw that it was good! And while Janet and I have seen quite a bit of God’s creation in Europe and other foreign places, we have decided to focus on the landscape of our great country. My encouragement this evening is that God created nature for us to enjoy and inhabit. My prayer is that we, as a society, will do all we can to protect these precious assets so that they can be enjoyed by many generations to come. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
