By the Light of the Silvery Moon…

I have to admit that the moon has really looked awesome the past week or so. It was another one of the Supermoon scenarios that I have written about in the past, but over the week-end, Indiana experienced tremendous cloud cover and it was not until Monday evening that I was able to see a moon that was 14% larger and 30% brighter than most of the time. The last time that this happened, earlier this year, I was caught up in the mathematics and statistics surrounding this unusual event. But this week, at least after the clouds cleared, I have been consumed by the beauty of the moon.

It’s the kind of stuff that poems are written about – the romantic qualities of moonlight. In fact, there is the ever so slight hint in the air that fall is just around the corner and I always love that time of year. But back to the moon – it’s just magnificent. And when I stood outside and stared at it, it’s difficult to imagine that the moon doesn’t have its own light source – it only reflects light from the sun. But who can question whether there is a God when you look up and see things like the starry night and the bright moon? In some parts of the world, people still worship the moon, the sun and the stars. But that really isn’t consistent with God’s desire. After all, we are to worship the Creator, not the created. But sometimes in the heat of the moment, we forget the order of things.

The verse for tonight is from Deut. 4:19, “And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.” In other words, these heavenly creations belong to all of us – they weren’t meant for just one people group or nation – they are a gift from God to everyone. My encouragement this evening is to look for the things that God has put in our lives that speak volumes about His love for us. And my prayer is that from time to time, you will send up a little thank you to the Father and His Son for the little things that they have created to share with us… Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
