Boss’s Day

By October 16, 2012August 30th, 2022Devotional

Today has been a busy day. This morning, I started out working with one of my downtown Indy clients and there was some random small talk about a special day, but quite frankly, people were anxious to get the meeting going, and so I didn’t ask for the message to be repeated. In fact, I forgot all about it.

Then, this afternoon, as I was sitting in my office down at the cafeteria, I was on a call with a gentleman who was asking me to get involved in assisting to start a mentoring program for young pastors. While I was on the call, one of the cafeteria employees came in my office and handed me an envelope. Now this isn’t necessarily unusual because I have an open door policy and every person on staff is free to come into my office at any time – in fact, that’s what I’m here for – promoting the idea of team and the stewardship of the resources that have been entrusted to our care. Anyway, I opened the envelope and was surprised to find a greeting card with the word “Inspire” written across the front.

Of course, intrigued, I opened the card and learned that it was Boss’s Day today. I didn’t even know it. There were the customary signatures of employees, primarily from the cafeteria line, and then several nice notes scrawled on the card. Among the “we appreciate you” notes was a rather long one which read, “I just love my job to the point that it doesn’t feel like a job. Does that even make sense? From the first day that I met you and saw the changes that you felt should be made, I feel like the whole place has become more like family than co-workers. I am truly blessed…”

Wow! I don’t think I have ever received such a nice card from a group of employees – people who have responded to the call to be a team and to advance the cause that they work for. I was truly humbled. It gave me renewed vigor to pursue the passion I have for improving the workplaces and lives of the people who happen to cross paths with me.

I decided to go out on the internet and find out the origin of Boss’s Day. It turns out that the day was created as a time to foster better relationships between supervisors and employees; and was started by a woman who wanted to honor her employer and chose Oct. 16th as the date – out of respect for her Dad, as it was his birthday. I was particularly impacted by one definition I found – “Boss’s Day is dedicated to all employers and provides a prospect of improving the liaison between employers and their staff. Many workers dedicate this day to their supervisors for various reasons, such as supporting staff with their jobs and careers. This observance also gives employees a chance to recognize those in supervisory positions.”

One of the other things about today that I am reminded of is the fact that I have a boss as well – Jesus Christ. Because work we do on this earth is a ministry – a stewardship that is entrusted to our care. Sure, most of us have earthly bosses, but if that’s who you think you are working for, you have the wrong idea. Because for us to be successful, we have to be invested in something bigger than ourselves. Any great endeavor must subscribe to this idea or it will be limited by our human capacity.

Tonight’s verse is from Col. 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men; knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” That’s quite a statement. Just like God owns everything, we all ultimately work for Him. My encouragement this evening is to let you know that you have a great boss who cares about you more than you can possibly imagine. My prayer is that you will appreciate the work that you may have – whatever that may be and that you will remember who you work for. Happy Boss’s Day, Lord – and thanks for the work… may you be honored in all we do.

Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
