National Tie One On Day…

Today is Thanksgiving Day, 2021. Since I have written about Thanksgiving in past years, I thought I would write about yesterday instead – National Tie One On Day… Now, before you try to get ahead of me, the title could be a little misleading if you don’t think of all the options…

Thanksgiving Eve isn’t about heavy drinking or dressing up with a “tie.” Rather, it is a special day celebrating those people who traditionally cook the Thanksgiving feast. That’s because cooks throughout the ages have come to be known as people who wear an apron – and that’s where the title comes from – tying on an apron – but for a special reason.

The idea of the day is to purchase an apron, bake something, wrap it in the apron and give it to someone as an act of kindness on Thanksgiving Eve. The celebration is about the act of giving and helping somebody in need. Of course, there is more to the history of the apron that to just cook in it.

I was unfamiliar with this national day of celebration until is was brought to my attention that there even was a Tie One On day. While researching information for this post, I ran across the following quote on the National Celebration Day website. I read the following descriptor about aprons and their purposes…

“Through the years, aprons have served many purposes. They’ve protected hands from hot items coming out of the oven. In a moment of sadness, they’ve wiped tears away. Generation after generation, they protect our clothes while we cook. Though, they also protect shy, young children as they hide from strangers. During moments of haste or even humor, they handily swat away unwelcome kitchen visitors (cats, flies or cookie snatchers). They’ve carried eggs, vegetables, toys, and even the catch of the day. Aprons fan us as we wait for cakes to finish cooking and on cool mornings, they’ve warmed hands waiting for children at the bus stop or for the postman. Occasionally, they even make us feel a little more adept in the kitchen, too.”

So, as you can see, the apron is much more than just something to protect our clothes while we cook. By the way, I admit that I forgot to put on my own apron this evening as I was carving the turkey!

The celebration begins with the purchase of an apron as a gift. Then, bake something while wearing the apron, write a note of encouragement to pin on the front or put in the pocket, then wrap the baked good in the apron and, finally, present it as an act of kindness to a person in need.

That’s about all there is to it. I loved the ideas of writing about this special day, but I struggled a little with the verse I should use. What would Jesus say? What would He be suggesting that I use tonight? It came to me that Jesus taught about being kind to all. While speaking with his disciples, Jesus reminded them that whatever they did for those in need was the same as doing something for Jesus Himself.

The verse that I chose is from Matthew 25:40, when Matthew gives us the words of Jesus,  “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” That’s correct – whatever we do to encourage and help those in need is just like doing something for Jesus Himself.

My encouragement is that you can never go wrong being kind and encouraging. My prayer is that everyday will become a Tie One On day… Happy Thanksgiving and have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
