Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

By April 5, 2013August 30th, 2022Devotional

It’s way late at night. And there’s so much I could write about this evening. If my father was still alive, April 4th would have been his 90th birthday. April 3rd would have been my parents 65th anniversary. No such luck… Or I could have written about our awesome trip to Alabama – and I promise there will be more about that next week, but for now, all I want to do is sleep. I started my day at 6:30 this morning, taught until 12:30 pm, drove more than 8 hours and stopped for a 3 hour visit along the way… I’m done for the day…

Therefore, as much as I don’t want to disappoint anyone, because I know so many of you look forward to reading something when you arise in the morning, I seem to be stuck tonight on the idea of bedtime prayers. I guess it is because I remember my Mom and Dad always coming in to say our prayers with us when we were little kids.

You probably learned the same one I did…

“Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.”

That plea for God to bless us has been handed down for generations. Not unlike our verse for the evening – a benediction, or blessing, from the book of Numbers. We are told, in Numbers 6:24-26, “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

My encouragement this evening is that the Lord does bless you and wants to keep you safe. My prayer is that He will turn His face to you and will give you peace, now and forevermore. Amen… Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace… It’s time to sleep…
