Put Me Right Through to God, Please…

This week, in speaking with representatives from ADP, the payroll service company, I was reminded of an old story that happened to me years ago. When I first had our temporary services company, I decided to use the payroll service rather than try to write all the employee checks in house. Anyway, the district manager introduced us to our client services person, a wonderful young woman named Julie Moses. Julie worked with us to get the system set up and it is an understatement to say that things did not go smoothly.

Initially, there was a conversion problem and the data was all messed up. So, the first week, the checks were not right. Then, the second week, there was a similar problem and, once again, there were serious glitches in the system that delayed the checks for our people. Of course, after each of these occurrences, I was on the phone with Julie trying to get answers to what was wrong. As helpful as she was, there was only so much she could do to solve our problems. After many calls during the two week period, we were assured that the problems were behind us and everything would be right for the next weekly payroll. Needless to say, I was skeptical, but Julie had assured us…..

By now I am sure that you have guessed that things didn’t go as well as I had hoped. When we opened the payroll on week three, we saw that all the checks were drawn on the wrong bank. That’s right – we had checks being sent all over the state and they were all drawn on the incorrect account. I couldn’t believe it….

Anyway, I dialed the number for ADP and the client services department recognized my voice. She asked, “Mr. Toussaint, do you want to speak to Moses?” My reply, given on the spur of the moment, without much thought, was, “No, this is pretty serious – you better put me right through to God.” She laughed and put me through to the district manager. Eventually, we got everything straightened out with ADP and worked with them for many years. My call became something of a benchmark event in the local ADP office.

As I have thought about that event of so many years ago, I can’t help but reminded of how we sometimes just need direct access to God. That’s right, without jumping through hoops, or passing some sort of test to see if we are worthy to approach God. We already know we aren’t worthy, but God beckons us to come, in fact, to come as we are. And Jesus, as part of the Godhead, represents us to His father. So Jesus is the path to the Father, and having said that, each of us who believes in Christ, has direct access to God, anytime – any place.

In fact, Jesus Himself reminds us in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Short, simple and to the point. God is there for us – and not only that, He will share the load, carrying it if necessary, to make sure that we will get our proper rest. Sometimes, we just need that – a little rest. And sometimes, we need much more. Encouragement, to be uplifted, to know that we are loved or maybe we need God to handle a problem for us. A concern that we just don’t know how to handle – but He does.

So the question becomes, how do we “get put right through” to God? Well, the first step is to know Him and to have a relationship with Him. After that, it’s as easy as asking for His help. Prayer is usually the best way to do that. It helps if you can get yourself in a state of quiet solitude, but in an emergency, arrow prayers will do the job. I’ve used both methods many times, but sincerity is the key to the whole thing. It is important to present yourself in a way that is humble and ready to listen to hear what God has to say.

My encouragement tonight is to let you know that the God of the universe has given you his private number – just for you. And anytime you feel the need, you can just dial it right up. In fact, you don’t even have to know the number. It’s on your speed dial, and that’s voice activated. Just speak His name – “God.” My prayer is that you will make the call whenever you have a need. No reason to think you can handle everything yourself – we already know that none of us can. So that’s it for tonight – the God of the universe is waiting to speak with you – just make the call…..
