Road Warriors

Janet left for Williamsburg to visit her parents on Monday morning. A dear friend of mine is heading out on a mission trip to Costa Rica with a group on Thursday. Another friend of mine from Michigan is living locally in Zionsville and only sees his family every several weeks or so – sometimes it is a month between visits. I could go on and on but I am sure that you get the picture. The world is getting smaller and people are on the move.  And I don’t mean just once in a while. Janet has already been east 3 or more times this year so far and I will be making my second trip to Williamsburg this summer – and it’s only July.

In the morning, I am heading to central Kentucky to work with a client team and won’t return home until Friday evening. Oh, by the way, our daughter Jill will be driving in from Oklahoma and should be here in town by the time I return. As I said, everyone’s on the move…

It’s so easy to get caught up in the ways of the world. And I don’t know about you but sometimes it is more difficult for me to stay focused on God when I am not in my regular routine. I get tied up the the mission of the trip and usually spend time with my clients well beyond what is expected of me. Janet and I like to drive when we travel together and, of course, that takes time away from some of our regular spiritual disciplines. Then there is the socializing with friends and family – another distraction from the habits we have at home spending time with the Lord.

Now I am sure we are not the first people who have had trouble trying to stay focused on God on the road. The distractions probably went all the way back to the time of the disciples as they were being sent to the outermost parts of the earth to spread the Good News. Come to think of it, Old Testament folks also had their minds wander from God when they travelled from city to city.

So as I get ready to hit the road again, I can’t help but think that God is accessible to me wherever I am. I may forget God but He never forgets me. And if I am smart, I can call out to God, just like David, no matter where I am. The verse for tonight is from the Psalms – one that King David wrote. From Psa. 61:2-3, David writes, “From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.” My encouragement this evening is that the same God who is with you at home is with you on the road… My prayer is that you will call out His name and make sure that He keeps you company on your journeys. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
