Rolling, Rolling, Rolling…

I really love to drive. In fact, whenever I can, I would rather drive than fly. And I have the distinct pleasure of working with a number of great people down in southwestern Indiana who welcome me into their workplace on a regular basis. It turns out that I head there every other week or so and it is a rather significant drive – somewhere around 3-1/2 hours each way. Our son, Andrew, is very similar to me in some regards. He likes to drive as much as I do and and neither of us likes to be stranded without a vehicle.

But we do have several differences when it comes to the way we travel – and sometimes the way we live our lives at other times as well. Andrew reminds me in many ways of my best childhood friend, Bob. In fact, Bob and Andrew shared the same day for their birthdays – July 13th. Unfortunately, Bob passed away 11 years ago, when he was 50. And just like Bob, Andrew finds it difficult to get through life without music. In fact, he loves music – many types and styles – all genres.

I, on the other hand, used to love music – back in my early years. But in all honesty, I don’t follow music too much at all any more. I prefer silence most of the time – especially when I am in the car. Sometimes, it drives Janet a little nuts. She always like listening to talk radio or music but I either listen to podcasts from Dallas Theological Seminary or I just sit there – consumed in my own thoughts or occasionally speaking on the phone. I could drive across the country and never even think about turning on the radio at all.

In fact, I have found that some of my most satisfying devotional and prayer time is when I am alone in the car with my thoughts. I can’t even tell you why this works so well for me – it just does. It’s like there are no distractions in my world – I feel the road, look out the windshield at God’s creation and commune with the Lord of the universe. I don’t even have the top open or the windows down – I guess I am kind of boring that way. I just enjoy my time with God on the road. So many of my friends can’t understand. It used to be that I listened to the Bible on audio, but I don’t even do that anymore.

The verse for tonight is from the Psalms and speaks to the heart of the writer who tells us, in Psalm 145:5, “They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.” That’s how I get fulfilled – I mediate on the majesty of God. My encouragement this evening is that you serve the God of the universe and He thinks about you even more than even the most devoted believers think about Him. My prayer is that you have a place and time in your life when you can commune, uninterrupted, with the Lord. After all, He is a patient God and will wait until you make time in your life for Him – whether it’s in the car or anywhere else. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
