“Running” into Fall

By September 23, 2018August 30th, 2022Devotional

Well, I guess I should really say that I am “walking” into fall since I haven’t been medically cleared to “run” yet! Tomorrow is twenty-two weeks since I severed my right quad tendon in a fall up near Chicago and that means that Wednesday will be twenty-one weeks since the surgery to repair all the damage. I didn’t know that without actually counting the weeks on a calendar. As the date moves farther and farther into the background, I am looking forward as opposed to backwards – with great hope and gladness.

To be truthful, it hardly seems like I experienced summer at all. The first several weeks after surgery are pretty much a blur and that just about took us into summer that officially began on June 21st this year. Then, of course, I was still in a leg brace and couldn’t do much more than attend physical therapy and sit in front of the TV. All my business travel was halted and I couldn’t drive so things were at a standstill.

The 4th of July came and went – pretty much without any acknowledgment and the rest of the month followed suit. In August, Janet and I celebrated our 45th anniversary on the 24th and we celebrated in a low key sort of way – like we usually do. The fall school semester began, Labor Day all but signaled the end of summer and now here we are at the beginning of fall, 2018.

In fact, fall actually began at 9:34 pm eastern time last evening. It kind of snuck up on me this year. I have been so busy dealing with getting better that I haven’t done much except physical therapy and, in the last several weeks, starting to go on walks with Janet and Hank, our Doberman. I was cleared to start exercising again and I am pleased to report that I am up to 2 miles per day now.

But the biggest thing that fall brings to me is a reminder that it is my favorite time of year and that I can really start to move forward again. Things are on the mend, I am able to drive and also able to consult again. Life is returning to normal. In fact, Andrew and I went out in the yard yesterday and I tried fly fishing for the first time in a long time. Andrew actually caught two fish! It felt good but it was tiring. I could definitely tell that I am getting stronger and I am optimistic about returning to normal.

I am also looking forward to day trips this fall with Janet. We love the turning of the leaves and the smell of smoke in the autumn air. There will be a chill in the mornings and it will be time to sit out next to the fire pit. Life is good.

The verse for this evening is from Luke’s book of Acts. The beginning of the church is recorded in chapter 2 and Peter, as usual, had a large part in the proceedings – even preaching the first sermon of the fledgling church. Right before the events with the Holy Spirit at the church’s inception, we are told, in Acts 2:26, “Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope…” Those words seem so fitting to me.

As the seasons change and life moves on, it is important to remember that God has been present in my life every step of the way during this past spring and summer. And He will be there after fall ends and we enter winter. In the meantime, my encouragement is that if God brings you to an issue, He will bring you through it. My prayer is that we will all be glad and rejoice in the way that God works in our lives, even when we have had a tough time for a season or two. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
