The Big Cook…

By January 17, 2022December 7th, 2022Devotional

Well, it’s far later than I usually write. And that’s because I am making memories with our youngest grandson, Drew, who has taken a keen interest in helping me when I make beef jerky or other items on the smoker. Since before Thanksgiving, he was been wanting to help me make pulled pork for the family.

Drew doesn’t really realize how much work can go into smoking things but there is a great sense of satisfaction when the job is done. I have only made several batches of pulled pork but when the kids found out that I was going to try another round, everybody wanted in on the great food. What started out as one or two pieces of meat has turned into a marathon and we decided to go BIG. We are in the process of cooking eight pork butts – weighing a total of 75#.

That’s right – 75# of raw meat that could take up to a full day to cook. There are several different sizes we bought and we started the prep right after dinner earlier this evening. It has gone well so far but it is 1:30 a.m. and we are only a small way into the process.  Drew is interested in pulling an all-nighter but we will have to see if he makes it! Admittedly, I am getting tired and I realize that I can’t go like I used to. However, it is nice to have company during these long nights and there are alarms set just in case we fall asleep!

So, this isn’t a long post this evening. Rather, we are in the process of making memories that Drew will remember for a lifetime. And I will have to report back to you later how it all turns out since we are still in the middle of our adventure. That’s one of the great things about living life – sometimes we are just really in the moment.

Our verse for tonight comes from the apostle Paul as he writes to his young church at Thessaloniki.  Paul is filling them in on Timothy’s recent return to Paul and tells the church, and us, in 1 Thessalonians 3:6, ‘But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.”

That’s what I want for all of our children and grandchildren. Janet and I want them to love one another and to have pleasant memories of the things that we have done together. My encouragement this evening is that we have a lifetime to engage our younger generations to prepare them for the future and give them a foundation of love. My prayer is that we will take the opportunities that present themselves in an effort to teach and spend time with our kids and grandchildren – even if it means an occasional all-nighter! Stay tuned for how it all turns out later this week! Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
