You Never Know…

Today was the day that I had my semi-annual checkup at the doctor’s office. With some of the meds I am on, they really don’t want me to go a year without getting an interim exam halfway between my annual physicals. Needless to say, I have been a little on the nervous side, but to be perfectly frank about it, I did much better that I usually do when I have to do something like this. In fact, my blood pressure is lower than it has been, pretty much, forever and the result of the exam was that everything is good.

But I also know that our doctor always runs late. And as much as I get annoyed at having to wait for him, once he gets in the room, he answers all my questions and never rushes patients through their exams. So I am conflicted – I really appreciate the personal attention but I get frustrated at the wait. I have learned throughout the years that it is best to bring something to do while I wait to see the doctor. As I teach Bible in our home each Thursday, I figured this morning would be a great time to complete my lesson. After all, we are in the book of Acts, the beginning of the church, and it takes several hours or more of prep for each lesson I teach.

So I brought one of my commentaries and sat down to read, knowing that I had 30 minutes or more before I would get called for my appointment. I was taking notes and getting in the zone when an elderly man walked up to me and wanted to know if I got my biblical materials from the doctor’s office. I politely let him know that I had brought the stuff from home but he wanted to know all about my background, schooling and a host of other questions all relating to faith and my studies. At one point I thought he was going to ask for our address so he could stop by and attend the study.

Now I became conflicted again. On one hand I wanted to get my lesson done but it was clear to me that the elderly man really wanted to talk. And he was nervous because he had a lunch date with some guests who had come in from out of town and it looked like he wasn’t going to get done in time. So, of course, I set down my study materials and engaged him in conversation. That wasn’t my first impulse, by the way. I had a lesson to get done! But what kind of Christian would I be if I gave up the chance to witness to a person who seemed to have some struggles in his life?

The verse for tonight is from the book of Acts and affirms what we are supposed to do as Christians. We are told, in Acts 22:15, “You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.” Simple and true… My encouragement this evening is that God wants you to get your priorities straight and witness to those who need to hear the word of God. My prayer is that you will be successful and that you will be personally rejuvenated and blessed as you spread the great news of Jesus Christ. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
