Three Strikes and I’m Out…

By January 5, 2014August 30th, 2022Devotional

Once again, today, we have had front row seats to witness the awesome power of God. The snow started early this morning and has literally not stopped since. I have been outside snow blowing and have even been to Kristin’s twice to get her driveway done. I admit that when I went out the first time, the snow was absolutely gorgeous. I finished our driveway and sidewalks, then headed across the street to assist a neighbor. I did a little work here and there at the next door neighbor’s house and then went over to Kristin’s for the first time when I was finished with our own house.

The snow was clinging to the branches of the trees and it was awesome. I just can’t understand how people can question whether there is a God when I have scenery like I did today. After Kristin’s driveway was done, I was pretty beat, came back home and just crashed in front of the TV. Late this afternoon, I could tell it was time for round #2 and so aI went back out. I finished our snow blowing work and once again drove the half mile to Kristin’s. I completed the work there and could tell that I was really tired.

As I jumped back into the car, I could tell I was pretty much done for the day. Shoveling snow is one of the times that I can tell that I am getting older. It just takes it out of me to spend that kind of energy and my back is always sore afterward. As I was pulling out of the small neighborhood where Kristin lives, I noticed a guy in a truck plowing somebody’s driveway. I jumped out of my car and did something I have never done before – I hired the guy to maintain the sidewalks and driveway at our daughter’s home. I retired on the spot…

I really never thought I would do that. But maintaining one house is tough – two is just too much for me. So on hindsight, I am pleased with my decision. Now I hope that he is reliable, but in my gut, I think that he is. I am sure that I will miss blowing snow at her home, but I am sure that I will get over it. After all, I still have our own house to do.

But the story isn’t over quite yet. Yes, tonight I went out and did our driveway a third time. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but the temperature is dropping and tonight we are supposed to have the coldest temperatures we have had in at least several decades. You can’t help but admire the Creator and all that He has created – it was simply beautiful out today – I just think I was a little too tired to enjoy it!

The verse for tonight reminds us that God is all powerful. We are told, in Ps. 148:8, “lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding.” Even all of nature listens to God and obeys. My encouragement this evening is that God wants us to enjoy His creation and to take care of it. My prayer is that you will never grow tired of seeing the awesome beauty that God can create – even if it becomes inconvenient for us and takes all our energy to shovel all that snow! Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
