Moon Bright…

This week, the news has been full of feature stories on the brightest full moon that we have had in the last 68 years – and the fact that the next one won’t happen for another 18 years. While it is true that we usually have several supermoons each year, what makes this one so different is that it is the closest supermoon that we have had for years. Supermoons are generally referred to as a full moon that appear to be larger and brighter than normal – because the moon is so close to the earth.

What’s so interesting about all this is the fact that many people don’t realize that the moon doesn’t have any light of its own. In fact, the moon appears to be light because it reflects the light of the sun. So the closer the moon is to the earth, and the greater the ability for it to reflect the rays of the sun, the brighter the moon appears to us. But the core fact remains unchanged – the moon is not a source of light.

In a way, we, as Christians, are similar to the moon. We are not a source of light in our own power. That job belongs to Jesus. He is the light of the world, and where He is, there is no room for darkness. We, as Christ followers are charged with the responsibility of reflecting the light of Christ in the world. By doing that, people will see that we are ambassadors for Christ and that we want to introduce as many people as possible to the fact that Jesus is the light of the world.

Our verse for tonight is a simple one. We are told by the apostle John, in John 8:12, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Those are important words, for we have the assurance of Jesus that we will never have to face the darkness. That means that we will always walk in the light – and that means that we will walk with Jesus.

My encouragement this evening is that Jesus wants us to reflect His light – just like the supermoon reflects the light of the sun. My prayer is that you will ask Jesus to allow His light to be multiplied in you – that people will see you as bright and never in the darkness. Because everyone wants to be in the light – and in this case, it’s eternal light. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
