Tonight I am probably stretching to even attempt to discuss tonight’s topic. I am certainly not a physicist but a friend of mine always sends me articles when they tie current events to God or references in the Bible. Normally, I read them and then move on, but something about this topic really enlightened and challenged me.
This all started with a question about the omniscience of God. That is, the concept that God knows everything about everything. For generations, people have asked how this could actually be true. After all, nothing travels faster than the speed of light, according to research done by Einstein, so how can God know our thoughts as soon as we have them. If nothing else, they would have to travel to Him at the speed of light, and while that is certainly very fast, it isn’t instantaneous. So how can God know everything about us all the time – every bird that flies, every thought we have, immediately? What kind of power is necessary to do that? Is God really that powerful? It sounds impossible, but scientists decided to start exploring this phenomenon.
However, it seems that there are invisible forces at work that defy physics. The original suggestion that creation is mysteriously connected was first hypothesized in 1935 by Albert Einstein and several other physicists. This “mysterious” mechanism was verified theoretically in 1964 by physicist John Stewart Bell and validated experimentally in 1972 two other physicists, according to Fox News, where this article appeared in my feed.
According to the research, discussed in the article on Fox News, it was explained this way: “Two objects, such as sub-atomic particles, that are intimately related and then widely separated somehow maintain an invisible, intimate and unbreakable connection.” One object, maybe here on earth, and another, maybe across the universe, even light years away, even billions of light years away, have a connection that defies logic. What happens to one is known and felt by the other instantaneously, WITHOUT ANY DELAY AT ALL!
Now Einstein wasn’t too thrilled with this idea of what has become known as quantum entanglement because it violates his theory of relativity – that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. He even mocked the idea, calling it “spooky.”
While Einstein was eventually proven wrong both theoretically and experimentally, his label about quantum entanglement stuck. It is “spooky.” But to this day, signals that pass between entangled objects defy explanation. They aren’t light signals or radio waves. They are something entirely different – nothing really explains this instant connection across untold miles of space.
This unexplainable phenomenon has now been brought to the forefront; to see if it can help scientists explain the omniscience of God! This whole study seems to suggest that God doesn’t acquire knowledge about us at the speed of light, or radio waves, or any other known pathway. Rather, it suggests that God has a “spooky” connection with His Creation!
Just as particles across the universe instantly know, without any delay, what has happened to a counterpart across the universe, God has this same connection with everything and everybody in His Creation.
And if there is such a marvelous connection that is beyond our comprehension, it makes sense that it would belong to our Creator, God. Once again quoting author Mike Griffin, in his Fox News article, “Science does not erase the majesty of the divine; it illuminates it. It shows us that we live in a universe filled with unseen forces, deeply interconnected and governed by mysteries that should leave us with awe and wonder.” What powerful words!
There are many verses in the Bible that tell us that God knows everything. Due to the omniscience of God, I have chosen two verses for tonight. The Psalmist tells us, in Psalm 147:5, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” And the apostle John, tells us in his first epistle, in 1 John 3:20, “…For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.”
My encouragement this evening is that God is God and we are not. In other words, we aren’t meant to understand all the mysteries of the Trinity. In fact, the prophet Isaiah tells us the words of God, in Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” That is far beyond our ability to even process. But how awesome to think that God has a connection with us that defies logic and every known law of physics ever studied by mankind.
That should give us comfort to think that such a connection exists between us and our Creator. My prayer is that we will accept the fact that we aren’t meant to understand everything that God does, or can do. We should, however, rest in the fact that we know God well enough to know that He loves us and is steadfast in His commitment to us – He is trustworthy! It’s the greatest quantum entanglement ever! Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
